"Growing Community in Your Garden"

Community gardening is a resource used to build community, foster social and environmental justice, mitigate hunger through increased food security, empower communities, break down racial and ethnic barriers, provide adequate health and nutrition, promote and enhance education and otherwise create sustainable communities. This presentation will provide the key concepts of creating and maintaining community gardens including: (1) Engage and empower those affected by the garden at every stage of planning, building and managing the garden (2) Build on community strengths and assets (3) Embrace and value diversity (4) Foster relationships among families, neighbors and the larger community, (5) Honor ecological systems and biodiversity, (6) Foster environmental, community and personal health transformation, (7) Promote active citizenship (8) Integrate community gardens with other community development strategies and (9) Design for long term success and the broadest possible impact.
