A GRIMM TWO HUNDRED YEARS: FROM HOUSEHOLD TALES TO HOLLYWOOD - A Guest Lecture Series with Dr. Jack Zipes
In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the first publication of Kinder- und Hausmaerchen (Household Tales) by the Brothers Grimm, preeminent folklore and fairy-tales scholar Dr. Jack Zipes will visit Miami University Nov. 7 and Nov. 8, 2012.
His Nov. 7 talk, Hyping the Grimms' Fairy Tales, begins at 5 pm in McGuffey 322.
Dr. Zipes will discuss the historical background of the Grimms' own literary adaptations of the fairy tales, as well as the nature of adapting and publicizing the tales and fairy-tale films. He will focus the lecture's film segment through recent movie adaptations such as Catherine Hardwicke's Red Riding Hood, Tarsem Singh's Mirror Mirror, and Rupert Sanders' The Huntsman.
His Nov. 8 talk, A Second Glance at Red Riding Hood's Trials and Tribulations, begins at 7 pm in McGuffey 322.
Dr. Zipes will give a 75-minute talk on the film adaptation of fairy tales, its aesthetic dimensions, and its social and political significance. Dr. Zipes will show four short films during the lecture.
In addition, for students and faculty interested in talking to Dr. Zipes in a smaller setting, he is available for brunch, lunch, or coffee at 10 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm on Nov. 8. Contact Dr. Cesaratto (information below) to sign up.
Dr. Zipes is the most accomplished and well-known American Germanist working on the topics of fairy tales, the Brothers Grimm, and film adaptations of fairy tales. In addition, he is editor and contributor to The Great Fairy Tale Tradition, the main text used in GER 231: German Folk and Literary Fairy Tales, one of the most popular courses that the Department of German, Russian, and East Asian Languages offers. His presence would thus enrich our German Studies curriculum by offering students and faculty an opportunity to meet and interact with him.
