Three-Day Town Hall Meetings to Address Rape Culture
In response to a flier titled "Top Ten Ways to Get Away With Rape" recently found in a restroom for males in McBride Hall, the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program, the Women's Center, and the Coordinator of GLBTQ Services are collaborating to host three teach-in/town-hall meetings to provide an opportunity for members of the Miami community to discuss the impact of an event like this--do we have a culture of safety and security here, or do we experience events like this as perpetuating a rape culture?
The meetings will be held on Monday October 29 from 4:00-5:00, and on Tuesday October 30 and Thursday November 1 from 4:00-5:30 in 322 McGuffey Hall. Invited guests include Dr. Terri Messman-Moore, Associate Professor of Psychology; Dr. Susan Mosley-Howard, Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students; and Demere Woolway, Assistant Director of the Office of Diversity Affairs and Coordinator of GLBTQ Services. Other official representatives of the Miami Community may also attend.
The meetings will be facilitated opportunities for members of the community to hear from those with relevant expertise, to speak, and to connect with others who advocate for a safe, respectful and inclusive community. In order to try to limit retraumatization, the original flyer will NOT be posted or distributed. Audience members will be given opportunity to make both spoken and anonymous written comments.
