Two Serendipities
Dr. Richard Taruskin is Professor of Musicology at the University of California, Berkeley. His scholarly interests cover a wide range of areas, including Russian music, Twentieth-century music, nationalism, modernism and performance theory. He is the author of many books and articles, including The Danger of Music, and Other Anti-Utopian Essays (University of California Press, 2009), On Russian Music (University of California Press, 2008), and the six-volume Oxford History of Western Music (2005). He also serves as a reviewer for the New York Times and the New Republic. Through his writing, lectures and teaching, Dr. Taruskin has helped to reshape the entire field of musicology, repositioning music in the cultural, historical and political contexts in which it was created.
